In an exciting development for travellers and job seekers alike, the Philippines and Australia have joined hands to introduce a “work and holiday” visa arrangement. This bilateral agreement will permit citizens from both nations to explore short-term employment opportunities while enjoying their vacation.
The Presidential Communications Office made the announcement, highlighting the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that formalizes this collaborative visa arrangement. This “work and holiday” visa will grant eligible Filipino and Australian nationals the opportunity to reside and work in each other’s country for a non-extendable period of 12 months.
Key Eligibility Requirements and Conditions
The visa arrangement is open to individuals between the ages of 18 to 31 at the time of application, ensuring that young travellers have the chance to gain valuable international experience. To be eligible, ca
ndidates should have either completed their tertiary education or successfully completed at least two years of undergraduate or post-secondary education.
Moreover, applicants must meet certain health, character, and national security prerequisites. Additionally, they are required to possess valid medical insurance that covers their entire stay in the host country.
Once granted, the 12-month period will commence from the date of the individual’s first entry into the host country. It’s worth noting that eligible travellers can leave and re-enter using the same visa during this time.
Both Filipino and Australian nationals are expected to abide by the laws and regulations of the host country during their stay. The agreement also stipulates that “work and holiday” visa holders who choose to work during their visit will be subject to the same diplomatic labour laws and employment conditions as local workers.
Commencement and Validity of the MOU
The memorandum of understanding, signed by Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo and Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Hae Kyong Ku during Prime Minister Anth
ony Albanese’s official visit, will come into effect on a date mutually determined by both parties. Importantly, it will remain valid for an indefinite period unless terminated by written notice.
Australia currently maintains reciprocal “work and holiday” arrangements with 26 countries, offering opportunities for cultural exchange and international experience. Some of these countries include the United States of America, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
This new agreement between the Philippines and Australia is set to enhance tourism and foster greater cultural exchange, making it easier for young travellers to explore new horizons and embark on exciting adventures while contributing to the workforce of their host country.
