The Return of Chinese Group Tours: A Boost for Australia’s Tourism – Approved Destination Status (ADS)

Australia is gearing up for The Return of Chinese Group Tours and rolling out the red carpet for Chinese group tours once again, as the visa processing for the Approved Destination Status (ADS) scheme resumes today. This exciting development marks a significant step towards reviving the Australian tourism sector and fostering stronger ties with our friends from China.

The Return of Chinese Group Tours

Before the global pandemic, China held the coveted position of being the most valuable inbound traveler market for Australia’s visitor economy. In 2019, Chinese visitors on group tours splurged approximately $581 million in Australia, accounting for nearly one-third of the total spending by Chinese holidaymakers in our beautiful country.

Since the borders cautiously reopened in March this year, we’ve witnessed a steady return of international visitors from China. Consequently, China has climbed back up to become our second-largest inbound traveler market, a testament to the enduring appeal of Australia as a premier tourist destination.

Data shows that Chinese visitor arrivals surged past 50 percent of pre-pandemic levels for the first time in July, with an impressive 79,040 visitors arriving in Australia. These numbers are not just statistics; they represent the rekindled enthusiasm among Chinese travelers to explore the land Down Under.

In June, Tourism Australia launched its global “Come and Say G’day” campaign in China. This initiative is designed to inspire more Chinese travelers to plan and book an unforgettable Australian holiday. The campaign showcases our nation’s stunning scenery and world-class tourism experiences, underscoring Australia’s unique allure as a destination.

The reinstatement of the ADS scheme is expected to inject new life into Australia’s visitor economy, which has been steadily regaining its strength. This is indeed a promising development for our hard-working tourism operators, who have persevered through challenging times.

In the words of Senator the Hon Don Farrell, Minister for Trade and Tourism:

“The resumption of Chinese group tour travel will provide another welcome boost for Australia’s hard-working tourism operators.”

“The Government has worked with industry to ensure we are well positioned to welcome back Chinese group tours, including putting in place the relevant agreements between both governments and industry for ADS visa processing.”

“We look forward to welcoming more Chinese travelers to Come and Say G’day and experience the stunning scenery and world-class tourism experiences Australia has to offer.”
